Bricks are blocks made basically of ceramic material. They can be made of clay, shale, calcium silicate, or even shaped from quarried stone. They have been used in masonry construction for many centuries, until the skyscrapers arrived and bricks were used only on relatively small structures, or in the decoration of facades, hiding the concrete and iron structures.
According to their shape, there are many types of bricks: perforated brick, solid brick, tile brick or manual brick, molded brick, hollow brick (which is divided into: simple hollow brick, double hollow brick and threefold hollow brick), face brick, and firebrick.
However, to work in the masonry construction properly, workers must have knowledge of bricklaying techniques. These include: how to prepare the mortar and how to apply it, how to stack bricks and how to align them, how to build scaffolds; they must know the type of brick used for each type of structure, the different ways of arranging the bricks in a wall (bond), the quality and proper treatment of each material, and so on.
