The post and lintel system was one of the first structural elements ever made. It`s the bases of the evolution of architecture. It works in a very simple way: two upright members (post or column) hold up a third member (lintel). The post must support the lintel and its own weight without coming down. In specific cases, long lintels can be built, but there must be several posts with a short span between them. If the structure isn`t built this way, the lintel can “curve down” and the system would fall apart.
This construction system has been used since the times of the Ancient Greece, and we still use it in our days, even when there are a lot of new structural elements that could be used instead, like the arches, the framed structures, and others. But it is like Antonio Gaudi said: “The originality is to go back to the origins.
